Community Spotlight: Calmer Choice

Calmer Choice is a grassroots community-based non-profit established in 2010 that partners with schools and community organizations across Cape Cod to deliver a mindfulness-based universal prevention program. This program equips children and adults with the skills to increase inner resilience, reduce the impact of stress, manage emotional responses, learn self-regulation and increase their sense of happiness and well-being. Our goal is to provide skills that will diminish the risk of violence, substance abuse, and other self-destructive behaviors. Ultimately, Calmer Choice envisions a world in which people lead lives of kindness and compassion towards themselves and others.

Calmer Choice delivers its innovative programming through three distinct arms: Calmer Choice in the Classroom, programming delivered in schools directly by Calmer Choice instructors; Calmer Choice Partner Schools, programming delivered by trained school staff, and Calmer Choice Community Programs, programming delivered by Calmer Choice instructors across a broad population of Cape residents from children to adults in various community-based organizations. Our programming is backed by scientific research, aligns with the state-mandated social-emotional learning curriculum framework, and was recently recognized by Massachusetts Governor Charles D. Baker as a key partner in the states anti-addiction efforts.

During the 2018-19 school year, Calmer Choice is partnering with 20 schools in 7 districts and will serve more than 6,000 young people in the classroom and many other children and adults through our community-based programs. Since we began in 2010, we have impacted more than 26,000 children in 12 school districts across the Cape. Shepley Wood Products is proud to support Calmer Choice and their mission to deliver mindfulness-based programs throughout the community.
