On Sunday, July 18, a group of us from Shepley had a chance to enjoy the company of close to 1500 motorcyclists and support the 12th Annual Big Nick’s Ride for the Fallen.
The 35 mile ride from Bourne to South Yarmouth recognizes the sacrifices that are made by the few to support the many. It is also a fundraiser to support Veterans programs around the Cape and Islands. Most importantly, it is families finding a way to channel their grief into a way to help others. It is an event that brings people together and makes us feel pride in our fellow men and women serving in the armed forces.
The idea of turning the tragedy of losing a son in battle into a positive effort to support Cape Cod Veterans and to honor their service is what inspired us to support this event. Big Nick’s Ride honors not just Corporal Nicholas Xiarhos, son of former Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief and now State Representative, Steven Xiarhos, but all the Gold Star Families of Cape Cod, who have lost sons and daughters in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Thank you to everyone who joined us this past weekend for the ride, and a very special thanks to everyone who held up signs, waved flags, and cheered us on all along the 35 mile ride. Your support was once again overwhelming and appreciated. Thank you to all our media partners who helped us spread the word, and congratulations to everyone on the Big Nick Ride Committee for another spectacular event. It is truly inspiring to see how, year after year, this event continues to grow and bring our communities together for a great cause.
