Changes During My Career

As I prepare to step away from the lumber and building materials industry, I’ve reflected on some of the changes that have taken place during the last 42 years and there have been many.

Let’s start with equipment. When I started at Shepley, there were very few boom trucks, moffets, or tractor trailers out on the road, but now most yards have many of each. We have many more forklifts than we did back then and all Shepley yards now have an auto stack for ease of customer loading. Another area that has seen a big change is technology. Like all technology, ours has exploded. In years past, we did all our take-offs by hand. Now, we have an entire department dedicated to doing take-offs and creating parts lists by computer. Our roofing department can measure your roof from the Shepley office. Our millwork shop is equipped with an eight-head moulder. CNC machines allow us to create pretty much anything you can dream up! We have a digitizer that allows us to do cones and radius work without making a template first.

I would also like to talk a little bit about people. I must say that our caliber of people has stayed the same over the years. We had 32 employees on staff when I started and now we’re pushing close to 160 exceptional people working here at Shepley. We have so many more products that we need specialists in hardware, windows, and roofing to name a few.

Speaking of products, what we offer has also evolved, driven by customers’ wants and needs, changes to the building code, and our environment. We now offer many options in all phases, be it windows, doors, hardware, roofing, exterior trim, siding, or engineered wood products.

The evolution of this industry has been amazing! And I’m happy to be a part of it. I ended up here unintentionally and am grateful for that twist of fate my life took when I was in my 20’s. I’ve met lifelong friends in customers, suppliers and coworkers and have engrained myself in this community. I encourage young people to consider the lumber and building materials industry as a career choice. The need for housing is a constant and you have the opportunity to be a part of supplying the American Dream!
