Toolbox Talks: Space Heater Precautions

Space heaters can provide comfort in cold environments, but they can also pose serious fire and safety risks if not used properly. Each year, workplace fires and injuries occur due to improper use of portable heaters. Let’s review how to keep everyone safe.

Key Precautions

Only use space heaters that are UL-listed or approved by your company’s safety team.

Check the heater, cord, and plug for damage before each use. Never use a heater with frayed cords or exposed wires.

Keep heaters at least 3 feet (1 meter) away from anything that can burn: paper, fabric, furniture, boxes, etc. Place heaters on flat, stable, nonflammable surfaces—never on or under desks, chairs, or carpets. Do not block exits, walkways, or emergency equipment with the heater placement.

Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet. Avoid using extension cords or power strips, which can overheat. Do not run cords under rugs, mats, or across walkways/hallways.

Turn off and unplug heaters when leaving the room or at the end of the workday. Never leave a heater running overnight or in an unattended area.

Do not use space heaters in damp or wet areas (bathrooms, kitchens, etc.). Keep heaters away from sources of water to prevent electrical shock.

If you smell burning, see sparks, or the heater malfunctions, unplug it immediately and report it. In case of fire, activate the fire alarm, evacuate, and call emergency services.

Space heaters are for additional comfort, but if used improperly, they can cause a fire that may injure coworkers and damage property.
