Work Safely with Subcontractors!

Working with subcontractors is often a necessary part of the job, and it’s important to find a good way to work around each other so both sides can get their work done safely. Subcontractors are often in a new environment and don’t always know how everything flows on the worksite. Anytime someone is in a new environment, it takes time to learn the ropes. Here are some helpful tips on how to work safely with subcontractors:

Meet before starting work

Each day on a job site can be different. Tasks get completed and need to keep moving on to the next step. Meet with the subcontractors at the beginning of each day to arrange a good schedule that is safe for all crew members who are working.

Look Up, Speak Up

If you are working and notice something not being done correctly, let the worker and your supervisor know. If a subcontractor’s employee isn’t following protocol, make it known so it can be addressed to keep the worksite safe and avoid unnecessary injuries.

Communicate Frequently

If there is no communication between you and the subcontracting team, it will be hard to do the work safely. Let them know how your team works, what is expected, what hazards may be present and how to address them, and talk to them about the safety precautions in place. Subcontractors can’t follow safe work practices, or job site specific processes if they are not made aware of them.

Stop Work for Hazards

If a hazard gets brought to your attention, all work needs to stop so the issue can be taken care of safely. You always want to avoid injuries to your team and the subcontracting team members at all costs.
